- I really liked learning how to teach the choreography. To start with the basics then move on. Also, you taught us to have the class repeat all the different combos several times before moving on. That build up way of teaching the dance is great! I was needing some tips on that so that was wonderful. That way, you can teach a dance with more moves in it as opposed to just a few for the chorus and the verse and the bridge. I will now start teaching choreo both ways to change it up.

10 Most Effective Ways to Get Over Your Sugar Cravings
We all know that our blood sugar level goes up, then down after a sugar high, but many don’t realize the emotional roller coaster ride that accompanies that sweet, seductive flavour. We feel happy and energetic for a while and then unexplainably, we are arguing with our friend or lover. We experience unexplained mood swings, anger, tiredness and major binges. The white stuff is sneaky, seductive and wants to keep us hooked!
Are you ready to banish your sugar cravings once and for all? Here are “10 Most Effective Ways to Help You Get Over Your Sugar Cravings”.
1. Reduce or eliminate caffeine. The ups and downs of caffeine include dehydration and blood sugar swings, causing sugar cravings to be more frequent.
2. Drink water. Sometimes sweet cravings are a sign of dehydration. Before you go for the sugar, have a glass of water and then wait a few minutes to see what happens. Caution: soft drinks are now America’s number one source of added sugar.
3. Eat sweet vegetables and fruit. They are sweet, healthy and delicious. The more you eat, the less you crave sugar.
4. Use gentle sweets. Avoid chemicalized, artificial sweeteners and foods with added sugar. Use gentle sweeteners like maple syrup, raw honey, brown rice syrup, dried fruit, stevia, barley, malt and agave nectar.
5. Get physical activity. Start with simple activities, like walking or yoga. Start with 10 minutes a day and gradually increase. It will help balance your blood sugar levels, boost your energy, and reduce tension without medicating yourself with sugar!
6. Get more sleep, rest and relaxation. When you are tired or stressed, your body will crave energy-in the form of sugar. These cravings are often a result of being sleep-deprived, going to bed late or waking up early, sometimes for months and years on end.
7. Evaluate the amount of animal food you eat. Eating too much can lead to cravings for sweets. So can eating too little! A good health counselor will help you sort this out. Experiment. Respect your body’s individuality.
8. Eliminate fat-free or low-fat foods. These foods contain high quantities of sugar to compensate for lack of flavor and fat, which will send you on the roller-coaster ride of sugar highs and lows.
9. Experiment with spices. Coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and cardamom will naturally sweeten your foods and reduce cravings.
10. Slow down and find sweetness in non-food ways! You body does not biologically need sugar, but it does long for hugs, time with friends, outside time, workouts, massages, etc. When life becomes sweet enough itself, no additives are needed!

Nikki Bergen (Downtown Toronto & Oakville)

- What are three words that best describe Nikki?
Positive, adventurous, open-minded - Tell us a bit about yourself: the true Diva.
I love dance, travel, photography, perfume, disco balls, eyeliner, Prince, stilettos, a good rock concert, making no excuses, dinner with friends, Mozart and making your dreams happen. - How did you get into teaching dance/fitness? Tell us about your experiences in the industry.
I started dancing at age 4 and never stopped. I swapped ballet and salsa in my teens and traveled to Cancun, Mexico to choreograph resort shows. The Ballroom and Latin bug stuck and upon returning to Toronto I worked for years at Arthur Murray. After a dance injury I turned to Stott Pilates for my own rehab and immediately recognized the benefits – not only to dancers but also to everyone. I decided to become an instructor and founded my company Grace Corps Studio! Today I’m performing, teaching dance and Pilates and feeling blessed to be doing what I love. - Why did you decide join DivaGirl?
I truly believe in a network of women supporting other women. Entrepreneurial spirit is a precious commodity that should be fostered and shared. I wanted to be a part of that.
- Tell us a bit about the classes/workshops that you offer to the DivaGirl Community.
I teach Pilates to tone, strengthen and elongate the muscles. There are beginner to advanced classes that will leave you feeling tighter, straighter and more in touch with your body. Classes run in Oakville and downtown Toronto. I also offer private and group ballroom and Latin dance lessons around the GTA, in particular for people preparing for their wedding dance. - Why should women attend your DivaGirl classes/workshops?
For grace, confidence and better relationships! Pilates will tone your entire body and leave you feeling flexible and strong. Ballroom and Latin dance is a better cardiovascular workout than anything I’ve ever experienced. Dancing with a partner builds skills like cooperation, communication and trust – all key elements to a strong relationship! - What constitutes you as a Diva?
I believe in my dreams. I support other women. I know what I’m worth and won’t settle for less. Oh and I love red wine, yachts and the south of France. - What are your top three tips to help women get fit, have fun and feel sexy?
1) Do what moves you (what you love).
2) Remember you can only hold one clear thought in your mind at a time: choose a positive one.
3) Wear sensuous perfume and moisturizer everyday.
- Are there any upcoming workshops/events/projects that you are working on, that you would like to share to the DivaGirl community?
We have a wedding dance 101 workshop coming Sunday April 18 in Oakville! Learn basics to make you First Dance a smashing success! This is a great event as an intro to you and your whole bridal party. Divas in the City- June 3rd. This is one event that you don’t want to miss! - Final comments?

We have heard for years the negative effects sugar has on our body, but sweeteners are an entirely different thing. We are one of the first generations to feel the full effects of what artificial sweeteners are doing to us and our children. Bottom line, if you great grandmother didn’t consume it you probably don’t need to if you value your health.
Get Fit! Stay Fit!
There are so many easy and fun ways to get fit! You don’t have to be a star athlete to run three times a week for 20 minutes each time. Nor do you have to be an Olympic gymnast to be flexible or participate in a weekly yoga class. Dancing is another way to get fit, it’s inexpensive and a fun and creative way to socialize! If you like the outdoors, blade, ride a bike, hike and spend some time with nature while you’re at it! If you’re not partial to the outdoors, pack a bag and get to the gym where you can walk on a treadmill with a high incline or pedal a bike with major resistance. You’ll also get the opportunity to slip on your ipod and listen to some cool beats! You can also buy DVDs and books and mags that feature pre-made fitness routines. If you’re competitive and enjoy the rush of competing, sign up to play on a sports team such as volleyball, basketball, tennis or soccer. To get in shape, all it takes is a half hour everyday or a full hour 3 to 4 times a week … and the payback is huge! A stronger, more fit and toned body, a clear mind that is less stressed, tonnes more energy and better health overall! So don’t just think about it … get off your booty … and Get Fit! NOW!!
